Why I Wrote This Book
In February of 1993, my wonderful grandfather passed away and I wanted to write a eulogy. I had never written one, so I looked for how-to books in the local library and book stores. There were none. That did not phase me, however, because I had been a professional writer for 13 years.
I sat down, trusted my creative ability, and was eventually pleased with what I wrote; so were my parents, my grandmother, and the many friends and relatives who attended the service. I know my grandfather would have been very proud, honored, and at times amused.
In the next 18 months I wrote two more eulogies; one for my grandmother and one for a close friend of 25 years who died of AIDS at 42.
I was convinced that a eulogy can play a valuable part in the healing process. At a time when memories are so important, the process of writing brings them to the surface to be relived. After you preserve those memories by putting them on paper and sharing them, a eulogy becomes a gift--to others and yourself.
I wanted to create a resource that quickly helped people write eulogies. I wanted people to realize writing and delivering a eulogy is a unique opportunity. Granted, not one you would want to repeat often, but an opportunity nonetheless.
Trust me, writing a eulogy can be a positive experience at a time when nothing seems positive.
Thank you for buying this book. I am confident it will work for you.
Introduction From The Book
You Can Do It ! This is a difficult time for you. You may find it hard to concentrate. Be assured, however, you can write a eulogy and deliver it. Just follow the steps you will be given and in an hour or so you will have completed a first draft.
For now, keep a positive frame of mind about it. Realize everyone at the memorial service will be with you 100 percent and appreciate what you say. Don't worry about delivering a perfect speech. No one expects you to have the delivery of a great orator or the stage presence of an actor. Just be you; that is enough.
